FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What are "Adventures in Complex Problem Solving"?

  • "A problem is simple if the solution is easily knowable, the relevant goals and methods are known, is possibly recurring, and can have a right answer. A problem or project is described as complicated when it can be hard to understand, has many parts, is difficult to unravel, yet is ultimately knowable. The underlying cause-and-effect relationships exist and require expert diagnosis. A problem or project is complex because it is never fully knowable, is not easily analysed, the goals and methods are unclear, there are many parts in an intricate arrangement. There is an unpredictability of effect, and it is influenced by and adapts to the environment." (Definition courtesy of: http://www.selectioncriteria.com.au/a-complex.html)

  • We believe that complex problems require a different approach than simple or complicated problems.  By changing the environment in which we engage in complex problem solving, we change the way we think and relate to each other. The challenges we face are serious, but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun while we seek new approaches for tackling those challenges, does it?

  • "Adventures in complex problem solving" are customized, multi-stakeholder, outdoor, facilitated exercises to help you understand your complex problem in new ways, to find new ways forward, and to make the world we live in a better place.

2. Where do you offer your services?

  • We offer adventures in complex problem solving anywhere in Canada, and anywhere internationally subject to local laws and work permitting requirements.

3. How many people can you handle at a facilitated event?

  • We can facilitate any number of people subject to location and the availability of facilitators, guides, and equipment.  We'll work with you to make sure the right participants are invited.

4. How long are your adventures?

  • How much time to do you have? Sunshine & Raven experiences can be as short as a day or longer than a week.

5. What are your operating seasons?

  • All of them! While most of our bookings take place from spring to fall, winter is a great time to get out and see the world in a different way. It's our job to make sure all of our guests are safe and comfortable, regardless of the season.

6. What about the weather?

  • We don't control the weather, and that's alright! We will tailor our activities subject to the weather and our participants' comfort. With Sunshine & Raven, there are rainy days, but there is no such thing as a "rain day".

7. What about persons with limited mobility or disabilities?

  • We believe that everyone has a right to adventure. As such, we can tailor our adventures to accommodate all people, regardless of age or ability. As part of our registration process, we ask all registrants to identify if they have any health or physical limitations that may affect their enjoyment of the facilitation process and we will customize our adventures accordingly.

8. Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

  • Yes, we do! There's nothing quite like fresh air to stimulate an appetite and we want everyone to enjoy their food as much as we do. As part of our registration process, we ask all registrants to identify if they have any dietary restriction and work with our outfitters or caterers to ensure that each meal is as healthy as it is delicious.

9. What do I need to bring?

  • Prior to the confirmation of registration, we will provide a list of required clothing and personal items for all participants, customized for the local climate and geography. For longer adventures, Sunshine & Raven will arrange to have the necessary outdoor equipment for the planned activities (ex. canoes and safety equipment, tents and shelters, etc.)

10. Are you licensed to operate in our region?

  • We can operate in any jurisdiction in Canada.  Depending on the activity, we may partner with local outfitters and First Nations to ensure that you have a safe and memorable experience, enhanced by local knowledge of the area.

11. What about insurance?

  • We carry liability insurance, and require all outfitters that we may contract to provide proof of insurance.

  • We recommend that all participants obtain their own cancellation, medical, and evacuation insurance. As is standard practice, all participants will be required to sign a liability waiver.
